The Awakening follows the personal journey of Edna Pontellier, a young wife and mother in late 19th-century Creole society. Over a romantic summer on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, she discovers passion and freedom, and reconnects with her soul. But, in the struggle to reconcile her newfound insight with the pressures of a society built on conformity, she returns to the comforting waters of the Gulf and does not return. Vaughn Dance Company's adaptation of this story - Reaching Out for the Unlimited - traces Edna's emotional journey, focusing on her complex relationships - with friends, lovers, and with the sea.
